Sales Tax Accountant

Mission of the Role:

The Sales Tax Accountant will be a critical team member within the organization reporting directly to the Accounting Manager. The Sales Tax Accountant must have superior organization and communication skills, while maintaining strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. This Accountant will have primary ownership of the Sales Tax function, will complete and review returns for several companies across a multi-state region, will assist during sales tax audits, and be the liaison during implementation of Avalara software. Additionally, this person will have extensive involvement in establishing processes, procedures, and policies for monthly multi-state sales tax reporting. The Sales Tax Accountant may also provide support to the broader accounting team with system implementation testing and other special project work as needed. The successful candidate must show great initiative, self-motivated, and be able to work with limited supervision.


The Sales Tax Accountant will play a key support role in ensuring accurate and auditable financial statements. Job responsibilities include:

  • Creates queries to gather data used to calculate, report, and review monthly sales tax for several companies, across 7 states
  • Establishes and documents standard reporting procedures for each state
  • Establishes new tax entities for newly acquired companies
  • Prepares monthly tax account reconciliations and account analysis
  • Project management
  • Assists with providing support for external audits
  • Identifies opportunities for efficiencies and streamlines procedures where possible
  • Executes the individual and team goals that support strategic and operational initiatives
  • Contributes to the team culture

  • 2+ years of prior sales tax accounting/reporting experience
  • Multi-state sales tax experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred
  • Strong MS Excel skills required
  • Ability to communicate accounting and financial information into common language
